Sasha Kichigina: Around the World with Vogue

When you’re a sought-after model, jet-setting inevitably becomes part of the job, and it’s no different when it comes to 19-year-old Sasha Kichigina, who has visited about 20 countries thanks to her career or various high school educational programs and debate tournaments. There have been snowboarding trips to Japan and Finland, from which the Belarusian has learned to appreciate “the colorful wood pieces that make your body hurt.” Then there’s of course the City of Light—a regular locale for the catwalker—where she enjoys even the most cliché activities, getting her fill of French wine and croissants, “because it’s Paris and it’s marvelous even pretending to be a little bit Parisienne,” Kichigina enthuses.

But even as someone who traverses the globe frequently, the curly-haired beauty still has many destinations on her list. At the top? Australia, South Korea, and all of South America. (Yes, all of it.) Awe-inspiring architecture plays a big role, but extraordinary landscapes are the stars. “Mother Nature opens up unceasingly like a breathtaking miracle; the hugest mistake one could make is to leave this miracle unseen,” says the model.

While jaw-dropping scenery is one aspect Kichigina finds most exciting about globe-trotting, she also recognizes the importance of human connection. “I am always curious as to how people think and why they do what they do. Meeting interesting people with different views on life [is one of the most rewarding things about travel],” she explains. That’s why no matter how short her jaunts may be, she finds time to communicate with locals in an effort to get a snapshot of what their lives are like.

Anecdotes from friends also inspire her wanderlust. After one of her pals returned from a four-month-long outing to India—where he came across an elephant on the road in the middle of nowhere—the South Asian country has really sparked Kichigina’s interest, who describes it as “a mystery to be discovered. [My friend] told me it was completely different from anything he’s ever experienced and that the food is so spicy you can’t even breathe,” she adds.

But try as she might, there’s one adventure that has been eluding her: a road trip from Los Angeles to New York, sweeping through the Grand Canyon, with a pit stop in Illinois, where her host family from a high school exchange program still lives on their corn farm. “[It] was always the thing hanging in the air for the past year and a half, but unexpected circumstances sprang up and ruined the plans,” she says. She even has her playlist ready for when she can finally grab the keys and drive, with rock hits such as “Lake Shore Drive” by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah, “40 Day Dream” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and “All the Way From Memphis” by Mott the Hoople.

To help Kichigina with her future travel plans, we’ve brought to life some of the dreamiest vacations in the video above. Watch as she envisions skiing in the Alps, driving through the U.S., biking to the Eiffel Tower, and exploring India (with an Indian ringneck parakeet named Jean Luc, no less), all the while dressed in apropos looks by Tory Burch.
